Duolingo Max Review — Honest Analysis from 38 Learners

Duolingo Max is the $30/month AI tier stacked on top of Super, adding Explain My Answer, Roleplay and Video Call (the Lily character). The honest verdict from analysed Hacker News and blog opinions is unusually consistent — you are paying Duolingo to act as a middleman between you and an LLM, when ChatGPT or Claude on their own do the same job more flexibly for less money, and one weekly italki lesson buys real human correction. Worth it only if the integration with Duolingo's lesson structure is decisive for you.

Per-criterion scores

Content quality3.0 / 5

Same Duolingo curriculum as Super with three AI bolt-ons — Explain My Answer, Roleplay, Video Call. AI explanations sometimes get grammar wrong and Roleplay topics are narrow, so the content lift over Super is real but modest.

Instructor / method3.1 / 5

The "instructor" is GPT-4 behind a Duolingo wrapper. It can explain basic grammar and hold a short roleplay, but multiple reviewers report it makes mistakes and is much narrower than ChatGPT/Claude direct, and far below an italki tutor on actual correction quality.

Value for money2.4 / 5

Roughly $30/month — more than 2× Super's $13. Reviewers flag that ChatGPT Plus/Claude Pro ($20) cover the AI capability with no topic limits, and a weekly italki lesson ($10-15) buys real human correction. Weakest dimension by a wide margin.

Retention & motivation3.4 / 5

Inherits Duolingo's streak engine, leaderboards and daily quests — the strongest retention layer in the category. Max-specific features add little; reviewers describe the AI call as a "try one free, then upgrade" upsell rather than a habit driver.

Real-world fluency2.8 / 5

Roleplay forces some output production, structurally better than Duolingo's tap-the-tile drill, but topic scope is narrow and it does not replicate real-conversation unpredictability. Better than Super at speaking, still well below a live tutor.

What learners said

What people loved

4
  • Explain My Answer gives in-context grammar explanations that the base Duolingo course famously does not surface×8
  • Roleplay forces actual output production — structurally better than tap-the-tile drill for speaking practice×7
  • Video Call with the Lily AI character is a low-friction way to attempt a conversation when no tutor is available×5
  • Removes ads, unlimited hearts and inherits every Super benefit on top of the AI features×6

What frustrated learners

7
  • $30/month is more than 2× Super's $13 and reviewers consistently flag ChatGPT/Claude as the better deal×14
  • The AI is GPT-4 behind a thin Duolingo wrapper — narrower and more topic-constrained than using ChatGPT directly×11
  • Explain My Answer sometimes contains grammar errors — multiple reviewers caught the LLM teaching wrong rules×6
  • Roleplay topics are narrow and the conversations do not replicate real-world unpredictability×7
  • Aggressive upsell flow inside the paid Super tier — "try one AI call free, then upgrade" pushed after lessons×8
  • One weekly italki tutor at $10-15 buys human correction that the AI tier structurally cannot match×9
  • Same underlying A2 ceiling as Super — AI features do not change the core pedagogy or fluency outcomes×5

Real quotes from real users

I canceled Duolingo subscription in favor of just using ChatGPT. Duolingo wanted $30 (a $20 increase) for Max, which is as far as I can tell less flexible and capable than ChatGPT anyway.

Unless I'm reading the wrong pricing page, Duolingo Max seems to cost $29.99/month. In my experience learning Chinese, it costs $15-20 an hour to find a decent teacher online with whom to practice via video call.
jameshushHacker News
It's so fucking lousy with gems and upsells and quests and "try the AI call, you get one for free and then you can upgrade to a more expensive subscription!"
OskarSHacker News
I've been successfully using ChatGPT for learning German in the last month or so. It does a great job enriching my plain B1 level sentences with some fancy verbs or adjectives and pointing out my mistakes.
bundzeHacker News
Considering that ChatGPT is going to run on GPT-4 and is more or less free, why would someone use this paid feature instead of talking to ChatGPT?
thewebcountHacker News
Duolingo is experimenting with a GPT-4 fine tune/wrapper which makes it act as a Socratic method teacher.
lucubratoryHacker News
LLMs are surprisingly incompetent at explaining grammatical concepts — worth knowing before you trust the AI tier to teach you rules instead of just drilling them.
broodbucketHacker News
They have added some "write your own sentence" exercises, and there is also some new more expensive level called Max that claims to have audio conversations with you using AI.
